Bringing a Yorkie Home

Deciding to own a Yorkie isn't a decision made lightly. However, after you've made the choice to own one, you must prepare to bring one home. There are many things, such as making your home and environment safe, that every owner should do before bringing a Yorkie home. Doing so will help your Yorkie live a healthy and happy life.

Making your home safe should be one of your first priorities when preparing to bring a Yorkie home. This means making sure all of your household chemicals, such as bleach, cleaning agents, furniture polish, detergents, and other like-items are all in an area of the house that the Yorkie will not have access to. You should also walk through your house and make sure there is no exposed electrical wiring that your Yorkie could get to.

You will also need to be sure you have the proper food for your Yorkies diet. You should always go for the slightly more expensive, premium dog food, instead of the cheap, generic stuff. I would recommend asking your breeder what food they recommend for your Yorkie.

Along with dog food, you should also get some treats for your Yorkie. Treats are a great way to teach your Yorkie to obey, potty outside, and do tricks.

While dog food may be obvious for most people, food and water bowls are often overlooked by first time owners. Be sure to have a these ready for your Yorke, or you may feeding them out of your own dishes.

Depending on how you wish to raise your Yorkie, you may want to buy a crate for them to sleep in at night. Some people like their Yorkies to sleep in the bed with them, but this can lead your Yorkie to have a separation anxiety problem. Letting your Yorkie sleep in their own crate will allow them to have their own private space and they will more than likely grow to love it.

Yorkies are a unique dog breed and require proper grooming to maintain their healthy looking coat. Some of the items you will need to groom your Yorkie are nail clippers, dog shampoo, a soft brush or comb, toothbrush, and toothpaste. You should still get Yorkie professionally groomed on a regular basis.

As you may already know, Yorkies love playing with their toys. So, be sure to have some toys at your house before bringing a Yorkie home. Toys will not only make them happier, but they will be exercising more, making them healthier as well. When you shop for Yorkie toys remember, Yorkies are small and some of the larger toys might be too big for their tiny mouths to fit around.

There are a number of different things an owner must do to prepare for a new Yorkie. It's a big responsibility that includes safe-proofing the house, getting food, grooming supplies, and more. However, the joys that come with owning a Yorkie make it worth the time.
