Yorkie Health Problems
We all love our Yorkies, and healthy Yorkies can live up to 15 years. Thats why it's important to know what the common Yorkie health problems are.
- Hypoglycemia, or low bood sugar is a common health problem in both Yorkies and Chihuahuas. It can be caused by too much time between eating, infections, bacteria, and parasites. If you suspect your Yorkie of suffering from Hypoglycemia, look for the signs. Does your Yorkie stumble around, looking dissoriented, and drowsy? If so, take your Yokie to the Verternarian immediately. Hypoglycemia can cause brain damage, seizures, comas, and even death in some cases.
- Sensitive Skin - A large number of Yorkies have allergies to food, shampoo, and even the air, which causes them to scratch and bite their skin. In addition, this leads to skin damage and hair loss.
- Digestion - Many Yorkies are born with a sensitive digestive system. This can lead to diarrhea and vomiting if their diet it off-balance or suddenly changed.
- Size - Unfortunately being so small can also be dangerous. It is all to common for for kids to step on, or even things to fall on Yorkies. Also, their small bodies are more prone to toxins in pesticides, and other chemicals. Generally Yorkies wont go licking them up, but you don't want to take that chance. Just be sure you're Yorkie is in a safe environment at all times.
- Bladder Stones - Yorkies have a high chance of forming bladder stones in their urinary tract. Bladder stones can cause a Yorkie to stop urinating, followed by death if left untreated. If you suspect your Yorkie is suffering from bladder stones, look for the signs, such as blood in the urine, and your Yorkie not urinating frequently. A simple x-ray from the Veternatian can determine if your Yorkie has one.
- Cataracts - This eye aliment can cause near-sightedness, vision loss, and even blindness. Cataracts are treatable if you contact a Veternarian.
- Tracheal Collapse - This happens overtime from the weakening of the tracheal walls. Some signs your Yorkie may be affected by this is coughing, or wheezing.
