Yorkie Training Tips

Yorkies are great animals. They are smart, affectionate, loyal, energetic, and tend to learn commands fairly quickly. However, training your Yorkie needs to be done correctly. Here are some basic Yorkie training tips:

Potty Training - It's best to start potty training your Yorkie as a puppy. When you see your Yorkie going to the bathroom on your floor, simply speak loudly, "NO!", and take your Yorkie outside to a familiar area (always take your Yorkie to the same area until they are potty trained). When your Yorkie successfully does their business outside, give them a doggie treat, and shower them with lots of petting and affection.

Remember to never physically hurt your your Yorkie. Spanking your Yorkie can have a negative affect on the learning process, and may lead to other physical injuries.

Yorkie Puppies bladders arn't fully developed until they are older. A small bladder, means they HAVE to pee more than usual. So, take your Yorkie outside frequently.

Crate Training - Crate training works wonders for all small dog breeds, Yorkies included. If your Yorkie has a problem being alone in the house, tearing up things, eating candy, peeing on things, then your best bet is to purchase a small crate for your Yorkie to stay in. Let your yorkie stay and sleep in the crate when noone can watch them. Your Yorkie shouldnt pee in the crate considering they have to sleep in it.

When you take your Yorkie out of the crate, the first thing you should do is take them outside to use the bathroom.

Your Yorkie should grow to like the crate. They feel a sense of security being in it.

Training Your Yorkie Commands - Yorkies are known for being very intelligent dogs. This is a common reason for many owners deciding to own one. They can learn commands quicker than many other dog breeds if done correctly. Here are some basic principles to follow when training your Yorkie commands:

  • Teach your Yorkie one command at a time. If you are trying to teach your Yorkie to sit, don't throw in other commands during the training session.

  • Speak your commands clearly to your Yorkie everytime. It may seem pretty obvious, but often it's the little things like this Yorkie owners will miss.

  • As you probably already now, Yorkies love their treats. So, use treats and lots of them when you are training. The best way to use treats is to place it in your closed hand and let your Yorkie sniff it. Speak the command you want your Yorkie to learn, and when they do it correctly, give them the treat. Your Yorkie will soon start to love training sessions!

  • Train in a distraction-free zone. It's easy to not think about the T.V. being on, children playing, or the cats running around the house during your training sessions. However, these distractions can make it difficult and sometimes impossible for your Yorkie to learn effectively. Be sure to take these distractions, and any unnecessary noises away.

  • Keep to a training schedule. You want your Yorkie to train everyday, but don't create long training lessons. The ideal time for a training session should be 20-30 minutes.

  • Don't get frustrated with your Yorkie. It's easy to get upset when your Yorkie doesn't perform the way you want them too. Just be patient and consistent when training your Yorkie and you shouldn't have a problem.
